Established in 2010, Human Animal Bond Research Initiative Foundation (HABRI) is a national, non-profit foundation of animal-focused businesses, organizations and individuals dedicated to achieving widespread recognition of the positive role animals play in the health and well-being of humans, families and communities. Founded by the American Pet Product Association (APPA), PETCO and Pfizer Animal Health, the foundation strives to support the research, education and charitable activities that validate the impact of the human-animal bond in order to lead the public to make improved health decisions. Additional HABRI Steering Committee companies and organizations include: American Humane Association (AHA), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Central Garden and Pet, Hartz, Hillís Pet Nutrition, Morris Animal Foundation, Natural Balance, PetSmart, Radio Systems Corporation, Segrest Farms, funded by Allen Levey, Sergeants and WellPet.

HABRI fosters government relations and public support by sharing the responsibility with its supporters though segmented work groups. The work groups include: HABRI Research Work Group, which identifies positive scientific, medical and economic evidence; the HABRI Support Work Group, which encourages and attracts additional support of individuals and organizations in support of HABRIís mission; the HABRI Government Affairs Work Group, which educates and fosters relationships with Congress to emphasize HABRIís efforts; and the HABRI Communication and Education Work Group, which develops strategic communication strategies to educate and inform the public and media about HABRI initiatives and recent events.

A key initiative of the HABRI Foundation is the development of a comprehensive online research center, HABRI Central, maintained by Purdue University. The center will provide access to research, resources and other information relevant to the health benefits of the human-animal bond. HABRI Central will be available for individuals, businesses and organizations seeking legitimate research to make informed decisions pertaining to the health benefits of the human-animal bond.
